Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is native to Australia and its 'discovery' was due to the expedition by the English captain James Cook, who in 1770 reached the Australian coasts. When they ran out of tea, the English sailors decided to boil the leaves of this local tree and, although its taste was strong, they were satisfied with its freshness. The first inhabitants of Australia used preparations based on Tea Tree leaves to obtain a brew that helped to 'condition' the stomach and the body in general terms.
About 230 species belonging to the genus Melaleuca are known, they all of Australian origin, whereas Tea Tree essential oil is exclusively obtained from Melaleuca alternifolia. Tea Tree is a shrub with very narrow, aromatic linear leaves (10-35mm long, 1mm wide), white flowers arranged in spikes and small woody fruits.
Tea Tree oil has been obtained by steam distillation and has not been denatured or mixed with other oils, what guarantees the properties of this essential oil.
