What is Lemongrass?

Cymbopogon citratus, commonly known as Lemongrass or West Indian lemon grass, is a tropical plant native to India, Ceylon and Malaysia, widespread in other tropical and subtropical areas. Cymbopogon citratus is abundant in the Philippines and Indonesia, where it is known as tanglad or sereh. Lemongrass belongs to the family Gramineae, it’s a fast growing, evergreen and aromatic herbaceous plant, and measures up to 1.5m high.

The genus Cymbopogon is known thanks to its essential oils. They’re of immense commercial significance for flavours, fragrances, cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, detergents and pharmaceuticals. It contains around 140 species, the vast majority of which are aromatic in nature and produce essential oils by steam distilling their aerial parts.
