Exotic and citrus aroma for your food

Citronella essential oil (Cymbopogon winterianus), 100% pure and chemotyped

6.45

MARNYS® Citronella Essential Oil is 100% pure and chemotyped, that is, it’s got a defined composition and results in a 100% natural essential oil. Citronella has been obtained by steam distillation so the oil has not been denatured or mixed with other oils, what ensures the properties of the essential oil.

MARNYS® Citronella Essential Oil contains the chemotypes: citronellal, geraniol and citronellol. Its colour and appearance ranges from light yellow to amber yellow. Its properties, such as its lemon-like taste, favour food use.

MARNYS® Citronella Essential Oil is a food-grade product and its particular citrus flavour is used as a neutraliser of excess spicy flavours, very typical of Asian cuisine. The lemon-like flavour of Citronella wonderfully accompanies garlic, chili and coriander, being widely used in curry, fish soups, sauces, fried food, salads, pickled ingredients and escabeche. Citronella is usually added into sweet-and-sour soups of Thai cuisine, and is combined with coconut milk.

You can also make a hot Citronella tea, which has got digestive properties, or you can add it into rum-based cocktails rather than the traditional lemon or lime.

What is citronella?

Cymbopogon winterianus, Citronella, comes from India and is an herbaceous plant that grows up to 2 metres approximately. This has got magenta base stems and belongs to the family Gramineae. Citronella gives an essential oil widely used for culinary purposes, as a flavouring, in soaps and for aromatherapy.

The genus Cymbopogon is widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and America, comprises 144 species and is well-known due to its high content of essential oils used for applications in cosmetics, food industry, herbalism and perfumer industry. The name cymbopogon derives from the Greek words kymbe (boat) and pogon (beard) ‘meaning that in most species, the hairy spikes protrude from the boat-shaped spathe’.
