Our body and skin are constantly exposed to physical changes throughout the year, which can result in the appearance of striae. Help keep your skin in good condition and maintain hydration levels with two of our oils.
According to the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, striae are caused by a distension in the skin that breaks the elasticity fibres, linear plates that are mainly found in the breasts, abdomen, hips and thighs.
This distension of the skin ends up atrophying the epidermis to the point of causing the typical appearance of striae. Why does this happen? The Spanish Academy of Dermatology emphasizes that there are different factors involved in the appearance of striae.
They are the result of a continuous and progressive skin stretching and they can appear in some periods of the life like the adolescence, the pregnancy, the fluctuation in the weight.
Red and/or purple striae
We can appreciate two different types of striae, mainly because of the colour they have and which is related to the time they have been acting on the skin.
Striae that are red or purple in colour are the first injuries to the dermis and also show an excess of vascularisation in the affected area, so it could be said that they are the first striae to appear on the skin.
When more time has passed, the striae become whitish or silvery in colour. This type of striae is the evolution of the first ones, which become "very marked lines" of whitish colour in which it is possible to see that they have already lost the colour and the skin has suffered a thinning in its upper layer.
Striae in pregnancy
Pregnancy is a physiological period especially related to the appearance of striae. Why? According to a study by the Dermatology Service of the Pontevedra Hospital, 70-90% of stretch marks appear during pregnancy and, as we said at the beginning, it is mainly due to the stretching of the skin and the sudden increase in volume during a short period of time.
The best way to prevent striae during this physiological period is to act before they appear, in a preventive way. It is important to take care of the skin as much as possible to maintain good elasticity during pregnancy, a period which is particularly vulnerable in women's lives due to weight gain and the appearance of hormonal changes.
Whether you are pregnant or not, you can follow these helpful advice:
- Avoid sudden changes in weight, and rely on a balanced diet and an active lifestyle with exercise.
- Keep your skin well moisturised by using creams and essential oils.
- Eat foods with zinc, as it plays a key role in cell renewal.
