The Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is native to Australia. It is a shrub with very narrow, linear, and aromatic leaves (10-35 mm long, 1 mm wide), white flowers arranged in spikes, and a small woody fruit.

All known species of the Melaleuca genus, some 230 species, are of Australian origin. Australia's indigenous people used tea tree leaf-based preparations to brew a tea that helped "settle" the stomach and the body in general. In the Western world, it was discovered following the expedition led by the English captain James Cook in 1770. This expedition reached the shores of Australia, and when they ran out of their tea supplies, the British sailors decided to boil the leaves of this local tree. Doing so, they noted the taste was strong but the refreshment it provided was satisfying.
