Peppermint (Mentha piperita, family Lamiaceae) is not only a well-known plant in traditional herbology, but also a popular herb commonly used worldwide in teas, flavourings and many recipes. Mentha piperita comes from the hybridisation of spearmint (M. spicata) and watermint (M. aquatica).
Peppermint is native to Mediterranean Europe and grows well in humid and shady areas, on soils with high water retention capacity. Mint is a herbaceous evergreen plant, rhizomatous and strongly perfumed. The leaves are the most important part of Peppermint from which the oil is extracted. They are dark green with reddish veins, have got a long oval shape with an acute apex and coarsely toothed margins. Both the leaves and the stems are slightly fuzzy. The flowers of Peppermint are purple-pinkish.
