What is patchouli?
Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is a species of plant from the Lamiaceae family, commonly called 'mint' or 'deadnettle'. Patchouli is an evergreen shrub, reaches up to 1 metre high, with a robust and fuzzy stem, large, fragrant and velvety leaves, and small pale pink-white flowers.
Patchouli is native to the tropical regions of Asia and, currently, is widely grown in China, Indonesia, Japan, Cambodia, Myanmar, India, Maldives, Malaysia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar, Taiwan, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, South America and the Caribbean. Patchouli leaves have been used to make herbal teas. In some cultures, patchouli leaves are eaten as a vegetable or used as a condiment.
