TO KNOW MORE

The term Lavender comes from the Latin verb lavo, lavare and means to wash or clean. Lavender has been known since ancient times, as shown by the work by Dioscorides entitled De Materia Medica, which praises the properties of lavender for physical and mental well-being. The Romans used Lavender as a bath additive, and in the Middle Ages it was one of the most valuable essential oil plants used in the production of perfumes and soaps, as well as a food additive. The herbal monographs by German Commission E recognise the comforting properties of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) during the digestive process.

Lavender (family Lamiaceae), also known as English lavender, true lavender or common lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), is an evergreen plant, native to the Mediterranean region (France, Spain, Andorra and Italy), but grown in many other countries across the world. Lavender grows up to 40-60cm high in groups. The lower part of the stem is woody, while the upper part is green. It has got linear or lanceolate leaves with curled edges and a highly-branched fibrous root system.

The flowers of Lavandula angustifolia grow in spikes arranged in circles (3-5 flowers per circle) at the top of the stem. They’re usually pale violet, although white and pink flower varieties have also been cultivated.

Although it is for food, as it is chemotyped and 100% organic, I sometimes add a few drops to give a natural scent to the fabric softener for use in the washing machine. I try to use less and less chemical compounds, both in food and in clothes that are in contact with the skin.

The Lavender scent is one of my favourites. Also, as it is 100% pure, one or two drops is enough and it lasts a lot. I use it with a little honey dissolved in water, as essential oils are not soluble in water and it works super well.
