EPA and DHA properties
EPA and DHA are derivatives of another Omega 3, α-linolenic acid, which is classified as an essential fatty acid.
Both DHA and EPA are part of the phospholipids in the membranes of the body’s cells, having a significant influence on the composition of the cell membrane and determining, to a greater or lesser extent, the structure and function.
Phospholipids play an important role in the development and maintenance of the nervous system and in liver metabolism.
EPA is involved in the regulation of brain function (cell signalling and neuronal blood supply), optimal brain and eye development, and prostaglandin synthesis. These latter are essential in the physiological processes of the cardiovascular system, platelets and the immune system. It can be easily converted into DHA if necessary.
Moreover, DHA is present in high levels in the brain, representing up to 40% of the total fatty acids, as well as in the retina in high concentrations and is essential for normal visual and brain function.
