What is myrrh?

Myrrh (Commiphora abyssinica), sometimes referred to as Abyssinian Myrrh or Yemeni Myrrh, is a plant native to northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Depending on the type of environment where it grows, it can be from a bush to a medium-sized tree. Its leaves are simple and toothed, bright green and the flowers are red or yellow. Myrrh is a dioecious plant, that is, there are male and female plants that depend on pollination for their reproduction.

From the peeled root of the young myrrh plant, an aromatic resinous substance is extracted by making a cut on the bark of the Commiphora abyssinica tree from which a pleasant-smelling gummy resin oozes. This resin is yellow and, when dry, has got irregular shapes and a reddish-brown colour.

This Myrrh oil is fantastic. I use it for meditation, as a perfume and for my skin by adding a few drops to my moisturiser.
