Memory loss

The decline in cognitive functions, such as memory, is characteristic of normal aging, stressful situations, or attributable to other diseases that affect the nervous system.

Human physiology, and therefore the brain, requires substances of dietary origin called nutrients: vitamins, macroelements, trace elements, essential amino acids and essential fatty acids. The brain needs nutrients to build and maintain its structure, both to function in harmony and to prevent premature aging .

What are the symptoms of memory loss?

  • Aging : as we age, there is a physiological decline in brain function. Generally, it implies that people must make a greater effort to retrieve facts or memories, and a greater frequency of stimuli is required to store them.
  • Mild cognitive impairment : this is a memory impairment, greater than that corresponding to age but less than in cases of dementia.
  • Dementia : in these cases, memory loss is characterized by a “total erasure” of an event and not the detail, presenting a severe dysfunction of cognitive functioning.
  • Affective disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.) : in these disorders, attention or concentration, and short-term memory, are mainly affected.
  • Others : hypothyroidism, head trauma, stroke, vitamin B12 deficiency, etc.

Memory impairment in adults

Memory impairment is distressing for both the individual and his or her family, since there is a functional limitation to continue with routine or extra occupational and social activities. The normal memory decline associated with age occurs gradually, with a decrease in memory tasks by 50% or more.

Cognitive deficits have been linked to various mechanisms, including cumulative oxidative stress and age-related changes in cellular metabolism. Many related neurochemical changes can be attributed to structural and functional alterations in neuronal membranes, such as changes in lipid composition and/or content.
