It's mainly a saprophyte, it is, a mushroom that lives on organic matter either living (for example on trees, knots or cracks in living hardwood) or decomposing. In a mature state, Hericium is easy to identify because its body consists of numerous simple thorns, typically long, hanging and fleshy, which are at first white, becoming yellowish and finally brown with age. It lacks stalk because it’s a sessile species.
