TO KNOW MORE

Grapefruit, Citrus grandis, is a citrus fruit native to Southeast Asia and the Indo-Chinese regions. The etymology of the word ‘Grapefruit’ refers to the ‘grape’ part of the name which alludes to clusters of fruit on the tree and which often appear similar to grape clusters. This fruit is also known as pomelo, what may be an alteration of ‘pompelmoes’. In Tamil, grapefruits are called pampa limāsu, what means ‘big citrus’. This term was adopted by the Portuguese as pomposos limões and then by the Dutch as pompelmoes

Grapefruit is the largest citrus fruit and its peel can be greenish-yellow to pale yellow, and the pulp varies from greenish-yellow or pale yellow to pink or red. It is one of the ingredients of Forbidden Fruit, a spirits that dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and that additionally contains honey and brandy. In Brazil, the grapefruit’s thick peel is often used to make a sweet preserved food. In Asia, grapefruits are often eaten during the mid-autumn festival or the moon pie festival. In Sri Lanka it is often eaten as a dessert, either raw or sprinkled with sugar. In the Philippines, grapefruit juice is mixed with pineapple and becomes a popular pinkish drink.
