Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot is the common name of Citrus bergamia, a plant belonging to the family Rutaceae (subfamily Esperidea). The trees show large, oval dark green leaves similar to those of lemon tree, with star-shaped, white flowers and gritty yellow fruits. It may be native to the Calabria region (Italy) and the word 'bergamot' seems to derive from Berga, the Spanish town from where the plant was later transported to Calabria (Southern Italy).

Citrus bergamia or Bergamot is defined as a hybrid of orange (C. aurantium) and lemon (C. limon). Bergamot is mainly used because of its essential oils, extracted by grating and cold-pressing the fruit peel. Bergamot Essential Oil is widely used in the perfume, cosmetic, food (used for the aroma and flavour of Lady Grey tea) and confectionery industries due its intense fragrance and freshness. It is included in the official pharmacopoeias of several countries.
