Persea americana, Avocado, is a tropical fruit native to America that belongs to the Lauraceae family. The word 'Avocado' derives from the Aztec word 'ahucatl'. Traditionally, it's been grown for food purposes due to its high nutritional value. The first evidence of this fruit dates back to the 8th century B.C. when its seeds were found buried alongside a mummy in Peru.
Avocado is a fruit with nutritional content of fibre, potassium, sodium, magnesium, vitamins A, C, K1, B5, B3, choline, lutein/zeaxanthin and highly monounsaturated fatty acids.
Avocado oil is predominantly monounsaturated, what may bestow healthy properties to your diet and the following advantages:
- It is very light and mixes well with food.
- Mild and delicate flavour which enhances the taste of food without predominating like olive or other oils.

Easy and healthy recipes: Avocado HummusIngredients: 200g cooked chickpeas, 1 avocado, ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil, 1 garlic clove, juice of half a lemon, 3g ground dried chilli and ground black pepper.
Preparation: crush the chickpeas along with garlic and with a spoonful of olive oil until it looks like a fine purée. Then season with the spices and a little bit of black pepper. Peel the avocado, remove the seed and cut the avocado into pieces. Add it to the purée with the rest of olive oil and mash it again for about 2 minutes. Add the lemon juice, the powdered dried chili and adjust with a little salt if necessary. Mash it again. We can serve it sprinkled with pieces of parsley or coriander.
