How the Blue Light from screens can damage your skin

How the Blue Light from screens can damage your skin

The skin is exposed daily to different light sources such as sunlight (uv or uva rays) and artificial light, white light or led light.

Both exposure to sunlight and environmental pollution are widely known factors that are related to effects on our skin such as premature aging. However, there are other factors that also affect the health of our skin, such as blue light or High Energy Visible Light (HEV).

Cell phone screens, computer screens, tablet screens, WIFI devices and Bluetooth are some of the devices that give off blue light. The skin is affected by electromagnetic radiation and blue light emitted by these electronic devices, affecting the maintenance and regulation of melanin.

As a result, the skin becomes more sensitive and the skin barrier can be altered, resulting in dryness, loss of firmness, dehydration and variations in skin pigmentation, among others.

Exposure to blue light causes skin damage such as:

  • Premature aging and photoaging.
  • Oxidative stress.
  • Dryness and dehydration of the skin.
  • Loss of firmness, expression lines and wrinkles.
  • Changes in skin pigmentation such as dark circles under the eyes or the appearance of spots.

Premature aging and photo-aging

Premature skin aging is the main effect of blue light on our skin. People who spend long hours in front of the computer or other devices will be more likely to feel the loss of radiance, dullness and the appearance of spots.

Oxidative stress and free radicals also damage the skin through wrinkles and fine lines.

How to protect the skin from blue light

Reducing exposure to blue light sources and other environmental pollutants is also key to maintaining healthy, glowing skin.

As for beauty and skin care routines, it is important to start with a good daily facial cleansing, especially before going to bed and after waking up, to remove dirt and impurities.

When it comes to moisturising the skin, there are some specific natural active ingredients that we can look for in different cosmetic products such as creams or ampoules. Some cosmetic ampoules have a high concentration of these active ingredients and are packaged in inert atmospheres, which guarantees the antioxidant properties of the ingredients.

Among the active ingredients with anti-photoaging and anti-pollution properties, Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) stands out, due to its ability to protect cells from common air pollutants, and its anti-aging and hyperpigmentation modulating properties.

Other lesser-known plant compounds such as White Horehound contain phytochemicals with anti-pollution, antioxidant, soothing and skin-protecting properties. As well as Glycogen which protects cells when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) and blue light (HEV).
