Success of the I MARNYS CDA Lapuerta School Chess Tournament

The laboratory of food supplements and natural cosmetics MARNYS® - Martínez Nieto S.A., with its founder Mr. José Martínez Nieto at the forefront, continues its commitment to education, sports, and healthy habits through the 'Play Thinking with MARNYS' project. Thus, on Monday, June 17th, the first edition of the 'I MARNYS CDA Lapuerta School Chess Tournament' took place, organized by MARNYS and the Lapuerta Chess Sports Club.
The event, held at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, brought together 85 primary school students from 22 schools across the Region of Murcia, mainly from Cartagena and its surroundings, achieving a successful turnout in its first edition.
The founder of MARNYS - Martínez Nieto S.A., Mr. José Martínez Nieto, presented the six trophies to the top three winners in both the individual category and the schools category. Martínez Nieto encouraged the students to continue playing chess and cultivate values such as friendship. "We want to help students distance themselves from bad habits and enjoy human contact, make physical friends rather than virtual ones, and learn to disconnect from screens in order to connect in a healthy way with the world around them," explained Martínez Nieto.
He also congratulated all the students and teachers involved, as well as the organization of the Lapuerta Chess Sports Club, and mentioned that there are already nearly 9,000 boys and girls enrolled in the 'Play Thinking with MARNYS' program. The goal for the next academic year is to increase both the number of registrations for the second edition of this tournament and the number of students participating in the program across the entire Region of Murcia, reaching 18,000 students.
Tournament Winners and Simultaneous Match with Aaron Alonso
The tournament winners were: in the individual category, Miguel Ángel Sánchez (1st), and Leandro Sánchez (2nd), both from Santa Joaquina de Vedruna school, and Pablo Ayala (3rd) from José Mª Lapuerta school. In the Schools category (award given based on the scores of all students): Santa Joaquina de Vedruna from Cartagena (1st), San Isidoro y Santa Florentina from Cartagena (2nd), and CEIP Virginia Pérez from El Algar (3rd).
Throughout the morning, a total of six matches were played in two blocks, before and after lunch served by MARNYS to the children and their teachers. During that break, the International Chess Master, Aaron Alonso, played a simultaneous match against 22 students, one from each participating school. Aaron is originally from Cartagena, trained at the CDA Lapuerta, and continues to achieve international success.
Checkmate for School Failure in the Entire Region of Murcia
This 'I MARNYS CDA Lapuerta School Chess Tournament' is part of the 'Play Thinking with MARNYS' project, promoted by the Cartagena company of dietary supplements, in collaboration with the Lapuerta Chess Sports Club. The project aims to bring chess and its benefits to all classrooms in the Region of Murcia and already has 47 affiliated educational centers, with almost 9,000 participating students.
This initiative is part of the MARNYS TALENT Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, which includes MARNYS' actions towards education, personal and professional development, all aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically with SDG 4 Quality Education.
