We join ‘Earth Hour’ for the fifth consecutive year as part of our environmental commitment
- We participate once again in this action that unites millions of people in the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss
- 2024 was the first year in which global temperatures rose by more than 1.5 °C1, a period during which new records were also set for greenhouse gases and air and sea temperatures
- MARNYS' commitment to the environment translates into actions that have a direct impact at the regional and national level, such as generating energy from its own photovoltaic plant or offsetting CO2 from the distribution chain
In the last decade, the highest temperatures ever recorded have been documented. Indeed, the temperatures of the four seasons in Europe surpassed the usual average1. In light of this reality and the need to advocate for the care of the planet, we unite for the fifth consecutive year in ‘Earth Hour’. This international event will take place on Saturday, March 22, from 20:30 to 21:30. Thus, we will turn off the lights and electronic devices in our offices located in Cartagena, dedicating a full hour in favour of the planet.
Under this year's motto “Switch off the light. Defend the Planet”, we reaffirm our commitment by joining this initiative involving more than 190 countries. Since 2007, Earth Hour has encouraged turning off the lights of iconic buildings and homes worldwide as a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the issue of climate change.
“Nature is the heart of MARNYS and our main source of resources”
The significance of this gesture is reinforced by scientific evidence. Thus, 2024 was the first year in which global temperatures increased by more than 1.5 °C. A period during which, moreover, new records were reached for greenhouse gases and air and sea temperatures, resulting in extreme phenomena such as flooding, heatwaves, and wildfires1.
"Nature is the heart of MARNYS and our main source of resources, so participating in Earth Hour is an extension of our duty to its preservation and social awareness. Therefore, once again, we join this global movement to actively contribute to building a sustainable future,” claims Lourdes López, head of the Corporate Social Responsibility area at MARNYS. In line with this, “under the framework of our Sustainable Development programme ‘MARNYS PLANET’, we have implemented actions to minimise waste and emissions, conserve water and energy, and promote recycling”, explains the spokesperson.
Meanwhile, Luca D’Ambrosio, Managing Director of MARNYS, states that "we are aware that protecting the environment and fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the UN in the 2030 Agenda must be an urgent priority. The fight against climate change through emissions reduction, waste generation prevention by prioritising reuse and recycling, along with water management throughout its life cycle in our processes are very important principles of our Quality and Environmental Policy”. He adds that “we continue to focus on projects such as the use of renewable energy, the installation of LED lights, the incorporation of heat recovery chillers, and the expansion of our photovoltaic plant. These initiatives bring us closer to a more sustainable future.”
MARNYS has one of the largest self-consumption photovoltaic plants in the Murcia Region with the capacity to generate approximately 1,250,000 Kwh/year and prevent the annual emission of 440 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, thus obtaining the Class A Energy Efficiency Certificate. Additionally, the company has its own plan to reduce plastics and use sustainable packaging and transport. Moreover, all the company's containers are made from recyclable paper sourced from sustainably managed forests, with PEFC and FSC Spain certifications.
CSR Strategy: six pillars that strengthen the commitment to society
Along with environmental commitment, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Plan of MARNYS consists of six programmes aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition to MARNYS PLANET, which includes actions focused on protecting the environment, other areas such as HEALTHY, where health and sport are promoted through support for sports events and local clubs, and COMMUNITY, collaborating on social integration projects, are highlighted.
Additionally, there is TALENT with actions directed towards education, professional and personal development; QUALITY, which reinforces the quality and sustainability of products; and ECOFIN, with actions such as the Solidarity Company Seal and the promotion of the economic and social development of collaborators, suppliers, and customers.
