What is cannabidiol (CBD) and where does it come from?

Hemp, or Cannabis sativa L., is an herbaceous plant containing different kinds of cannabinoids, including cannabidiols (CBD), which have no psychoactive effect, and THC, which has this effect.

Benefits of cannabidiol in cosmetics

It has been shown that cannabinoids are not exclusive to plants, but are also produced by our body and are called endocannabinoids.

CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in its cosmetic properties and is actively involved in skin maintenance.

How does CBD act on the skin?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is actively involved in the maintenance of the dynamic balance of the skin, due to its contribution to the formation and maintenance of the skin barrier, cell growth and differentiation, lipid production balance, among others.

The so-called CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors (present in the SEC) are found in skin cells, are of a lipidic nature and are closely related to all the membranes that make up the cells. CBD interacts with these receptors by modulating their response which promotes skin sebum regulation and provides emollient and soothing effects.

What kind of skin is CBD good for?

As CBD acts on the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, CBD is a good ally for oily skin.

CBD also helps to keep the balance of the skin as it is involved in anti-oxidative processes and in the maintenance of collagen and other structural proteins, thus facilitating the moisture and elasticity of the skin.

Why use THC-free cosmetics?

THC is a psychoactive substance in the cannabis plant, which causes memory and mood disorders, and can cause addictions if not properly managed.

For this reason, international law considers it to be a substance under health control, which can only be used for medicinal purposes (in certain medicines) under strict medical supervision.

What is the difference between THC and CBD?

As mentioned above, CBD does not have a psychoactive effect, while THC does.

Current regulation in Spain

In Spain, CBD is currently allowed to be used in cosmetic products, in oils, creams and ointments. However, only cosmetics made from seeds and leaves can be legally produced in Spain.

Cosmetics with cannabidiol or CBD

CBD is a very versatile ingredient and can be found in different kinds of cosmetic products such as:

Liposomes with CBD

This is a liquid, non-oily format, which, thanks to the liposome, efficiently increases the absorption of CBD into the skin. Usually these liposomal CBD cosmetic formulations contain pure CBD.

CBD cosmetic ampoules

These are non-greasy, liquid ampoules that may include CBD (cannabidiol) and vitamins. Cosmetic ampoules with CBD have soothing and comforting properties for skin with atopic tendency, irritated skin or skin with sebum disorders due to acne or mask use.

Oils with CBD

The CBD oil format is a liquid format that in some cases can take time to be absorbed.

CBD balms

This format is less dense than creams, and in some cases CBD is mixed with essential oils.

CBD Lotions and Creams

They usually do not contain only CBD, but other ingredients are added, and are dense in texture.

CBD serums

Serums are usually used to prepare the skin before the use of other cosmetic elements, with a non-greasy texture and more concentrated active ingredients.

Deodorants with CBD

The main purpose of a deodorant is to prevent/combat odour, without irritation, including zinc or baking soda, essential oils and cosmetic oils or butters.

CBD soaps and hygiene

Soaps are produced by mixing water, soda, oils (cosmetic and essential) and a number of stabilisers or thickening agents. CBD can be added to this, making it gentler on the skin than conventional soaps.
