How does the digestive system work?
The digestive system is the gear that allows us to feed ourselves and survive. It is made up of the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, and is closely linked to the liver and pancreas, the circulatory system and the nervous system. In a word, digestion makes most of our vital organs work. That is why, if digestion is bad, we may feel very unwell.
The stomach is responsible for the storage, mixing the food with gastric juices and slowly moving it to the small intestine. There, it is broken down into easily digestible molecules, which are carried through the blood to the cells of the whole body. What cannot be assimilated, such as fibre or dead cells, will be carried to the rectum to be eliminated.
How to have a good digestion after eating?
Many factors may affect good digestion. It is not only what we are eating and drinking, but also the speed at which we eat, how we chew, if we are talking and, of course, the health of the digestive system and how much and what kind of food we eat.
Among carbohydrates, proteins and fats, the latter spend the most time in the stomach. Keep this in mind at Christmas, Easter or at any other time of the year, when social lunches and dinners increase a lot. Avoid eating a whole menu of fatty, heavy foods. Instead, you might eat lighter meals and avoid alcohol and sweets. If your stomach is feeling unwell, it will let you know.
What are the symptoms of poor digestion?
The main symptom of poor digestion is a feeling of discomfort and fullness in the stomach. If our stomach or small intestine does not move as it should, the emptying process can take much longer.
